Mehman Huseynov, 27, a popular video-blogger and social media activist, who often exposed gross human rights abuses and widespread corruption in Azerbaijan, has gone missing since late afternoon hours of 9 January. According to eye-witnesses, Huseynov had been forcibly dragged to an unmarked vehicle and taken to an unknown destination by some 5 unidentified assailants in civil clothes.
As Huseynov’s whereabouts remain unknown, it raised fears that he has "disappeared" in retaliation for his journalism. As a fearless critic of the Azerbaijani government, Huseynov’s photographs and video materials were widely disseminated on social media outlets and used by local and international media and other organizations. His reports let not only general Azeri public at large, but the world know about human rights violations in the country.
Huseynov has not been heard from as of 20:00 p.m., and Azerbaijani authorities had not responded to inquiries about his whereabouts.
The family members and colleagues of Huseynov are extremely concerned about the fate of him, as he had faced serious threats in past months. The existence of the large numbers of political prisoners in Azerbaijan's jails is obvious that activists in the country are being targeted for their work and are extremely vulnerable.
